The Banco de Zaragoza was established in 1857 under reforms enabling provincial banks to issue their own notes. Its emission system followed a fixed structure: Serie A = 100 reales, Serie B = 200 reales, Serie C = 500 reales, Serie D = 1000 reales, Serie E = 2000 reales, Serie F = 4000 reales. When the bank was absorbed by the Banco de España in 1874, nearly all circulation notes were redeemed and destroyed. Surviving specimens, especially from the 200 reales Serie B emission, are extremely scarce and remain among the primary surviving documentation for this short-lived issuer. Read more →

The Banco de Zaragoza, active from 1857 to 1874, produced one of the most architecturally consistent and visually elaborate provincial banknote series in Spain. Its structured emission of reales de vellón comprised Serie A (100 reales), Serie B (200 reales), Serie C (500 reales), Serie D (1000 reales), Serie E (2000 reales), and Serie F (4000 reales). Of all these, issued Serie E notes are among the hardest to obtain; almost all known survivors show the characteristic circular cancellation punch used by the bank to void redeemed notes. The printed face follows the established Banque de la Martinique cheque format, bearing the heading “Chèque sur la Banque de la Martinique,” internal control marking “B.P.F. 1,” and a printed acknowledgment of receipt for the sum of one franc, to be debited from the account of a named holder. The place of issue is Saint-Pierre, with a printed year line left incomplete, consistent with cheque forms intended to be dated at the time of use. Ornamental engraved borders composed of tropical flora frame the document, reflecting French metropolitan engraving conventions adapted for colonial financial instruments. Printer imprints at the lower margins attribute production to Claverie et Fils, with engraved elements credited to Reschérer. Read more →
